Kenny John and husband Ben Price, took over the Restaurant and B&B at 7 Church Street (Monmouth), in January this year and they soon set to work transforming it into a Creative Eatery, Art Gallery and eight-bedroom B&B.
The art gallery owner and his engineer husband, Ben, spent weeks during the coronavirus lockdown renovating each of the eight bedrooms at “Creates”.
They gave each room a different woodland animal theme reflecting the Welsh countryside and being close to the breath-taking Wye Valley – these include the likes of owls, foxes and badgers. The B&B owners revealed how they transformed eight tired bedrooms into a Boutique worthy hotel while in lockdown.
Ben is an engineer by trade but he has a very big passion for interiors and creating quirky furniture designs. Ben upcycled where and as much as he could. The lockdown has given them a chance to transform the space and an opportunity to get it ready to invite visitors when the lockdown is lifted.
They spent just under £200 transforming one of the rooms into a beautiful space inspired by sewing, named the Hares Warren. ‘I found old cotton reels to use as handles on the Singer sewing machine, and made the cotton reel side tables from bits I had leftover from older pieces of furniture,’ Ben explained.
Although they are currently shut due to the coronavirus, Kenny has been working on updating the website with the new B&B rooms. He has also built an online art gallery where people can see and buy art by the local 30+ artists and makers they support throughout their spaces in Monmouth. ‘Having to close was a shame as it’s a very new venture, but it will be ready once this passes over and hopefully, we will get an opportunity to share our hard work and quirky bedrooms with our visitors.’
